Robin Roberts Chokes Up While Talking About Coming Out Story

Robin Roberts Chokes Up

When Robin Roberts publicly came out in December, she said she never could have imagined the kind of positive response she would receive.

But during an interview on "Reliable Sources" Sunday morning, the "Good Morning America" co-host was brought close to tears while telling CNN's Brian Stelter just how much of an impact her own coming out story has had on other people's lives.

Roberts told the story of a young man who recently approached CBS' Gayle King to tell her how Robin Roberts speaking publicly about her sexual orientation has influenced his own coming out story.

"Somebody came up to her-- and this catches me," Roberts said while choking up. "A young man whose mother was having a tough time and said, 'if it's OK for Robin, it's OK for my son.'

Roberts also commented on all the media buzz surrounding Michael Sam, the first openly gay player to be drafted into the NFL, who kissed his boyfriend on live TV after the draft. Roberts was unfazed.

“What was he supposed to do, shake his [boyfriend's] hand?” Roberts said.
