Roger Clemens And Brian McNamee Testify Before Congress

The Examiner has a nice recap of Clemens' best moments during the hearing. Here's one great moment:

And, now, our balls and strikes from today's hearing before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform:

-He's juiced on love! Roger Clemens, in his opening remarks: "If I'm guilty of anything, it's of being too trusting of everyone, wanting to see the best in everyone and being too nice to everyone. If I'm considered being ignorant of that, than so be it."

Clemens says that in the conversation he had with Pettitte, where Pettitte alleges that Clemens admitted to using HGH, he was actually talking about his wife, and not himself:

Mr. Clemens testified that in those conversations with Mr. Pettitte, he was talking about his wife's use of H.G.H. one time and on another occasion was referring to something he saw on a television show. Mr. Clemens sought to rebut Mr. Pettitte's sworn and damaging statements to the committee that Mr. Clemens told him point blank that he had used H.G.H.

The affidavit that Pettitte submitted to the committee, which allowed him to not testify and which implicates Clemens, contains a statement explaining why Pettitte chose to reveal this damning information:

"I have to tell you all the truth," Pettitte's affidavit stated. "And one day I have to give an account to God and not to nobody else of what I've done in my life. And that's why I've said and shared the stuff...that I wouldn't like to share with y'all."

A tense moment in the hearings came when Andy Pettitte's name surfaced. Clemens denied that he had ever told his Pettitte that he had used Human Growth Hormone (HGH):

Pettitte, who was excused from testifying, said in a statement to the committee that Clemens admitted to him as long as 10 years ago that he used HGH. Waxman read from affidavits by Pettitte and Pettitte's wife, Laura, supporting the accusations.

"Andy Pettitte is my friend. He was my friend before this. He will be my friend after this and again. I think Andy has misheard," Clemens said. "I think he misremembers of our conversation."

McNamee told Mitchell that he injected Clemens 16 to 21 times with steroids and human growth hormone from 1998-01. McNamee also said that Pettitte and Chuck Knoblauch used HGH.

Clemens and his former trainer, McNamee, were sitting just a few feet away from each other, and studiously avoided making eye contact while Clemens denied using any steroids:

Pitching great Roger Clemens and his former trainer, Brian McNamee, clashed under oath at a U.S. congressional hearing Wednesday over McNamee's claims he injected Clemens with illegal performance-enhancing drugs.

Sitting together at a witness table but avoiding eye contact, Clemens again denied ever taking such substances, and McNamee insisted he did -- while lawmakers questioned the veracity of both of them.

"I have never used steroids, human growth hormone or any other type of illegal performance-enhancing drugs," Clemens said.
