Why Everyone In Your Family Needs A Role

Why Everyone In Your Family Needs A Role

Of course, you already know that being a parent is an amazing privilege and responsibility. You also know that you have incredible power because you have the ability to impact your children in unimaginable ways. So what do you do with that power? In the video above, Dr. Phil explains that you need to remember you're not just raising children; you're raising adults who will define themselves in the world in large part based on what they've learned from your interactions.

"The idea is to set your family up in a way that is nurturing and accepting to everyone in it, where there is a role for everyone," Dr. Phil suggests. "A role where everyone in the family knows: 'If I wasn’t here, it would make a difference. I would be missed. I’m valued, and I’m loved.'"

If you're in a blended family or dealing with a child who's been through his parents' divorce, those needs are exaggerated. Dr. Phil concludes: "Look at things from the child’s point of view; it will change your values."
