As Clay Morrow in "Sons of Anarchy," Ron Perlman became a titan in the TV world. Though the show never got much award recognition, it developed a rabid fan base, one that was upset at the end of season six when Clay was killed off.
In a HuffPost Live interview Wednesday, Perlman said that while his time on the show is dear to his heart, he thinks things could've ended differently for his character.
"What I would've loved to have seen is kind of 'Oedipus at Colonus.' He's now realized that he's married and fucked his mother and killed his father. That's the Oedipus story," Perlman told host Caitlyn Becker, referencing Sophocles' ancient Greek play. "I would've hoped, because of the nobility that I saw in Clay from the get-go, that he had gone out that way. He didn't, but that wasn't my choice."
The show has gone on without Perlman and is currently in the middle of its seventh season. Perlman, maybe channeling his "Anarchy" character a bit, seethed Wednesday at the thought of his widow on the show, Gemma, as any more honorable than Clay.
"Don't ask me that. I can't separate. That whole thing was so funky, the betrayal," Perlman said. "The betrayal was ... she's way guiltier than Clay ever was. She's way more evil than Clay ever was. I don't want to comment, though. This is all in the rearview mirror."
