Roosevelt Gills Wanted For Shooting Ex-Girlfriend In Front Of Her Child

Police Search For Man Who Shot Ex-Girlfriend In Front Of Her Child

A Chicago man is wanted by police in connection with two shootings this week after his ex-girlfriend and her male friend were wounded in separate incidents involving involving the same suspect.

Joliet Police have asked the public for help locating Roosevelt Gills, 34, who was identified by the victim in a shooting about 7 a.m. Thursday in a public housing complex in northeast Joliet, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Police warn he is considered armed and dangerous.

There was already a warrant out for Gills' arrest when police say he spotted his ex-girlfriend, Tyisha Smith, 31, walking her 13-year-old daughter to school and sped towards them in his white Buick LeSabre, the Sun-Times reports. Smith and her daughter recognized his car and ran towards their home when Gills opened fire.

“The LeSabre drove up on the grass of the housing project, striking the 13-year-old in the ankle when she veered off,” Cmdr. Brian Benton told the Sun-Times. “The driver then shot her mother multiple times and drove off.”

Smith's condition was not released, but reports say she underwent surgery at Silver Cross Hospital for "life-threatening injuries," the Sun-Times reports.

Gills first threatened Smith Monday, during an altercation in her Joliet home where she lives with her 13-year-old daughter and her young son, ABC Chicago reports. Police say Gills, who is the boy's father, came into the house and locked himself in a bedroom with the child.

When Smith brought over a male friend, Tommy McDonald, 32, tried to get Gills out of the bedroom, he was shot in the arm, ABC reports.

Gills is described as African American, five-foot-seven and approximately 160 pounds, according to the Chicago Tribune. He drives a white 1994 Buick LeSabre with a temporary Illinois license plate 498M918. Police say there may be a black paint mark on the passenger side of the vehicle.

Gills is wanted on a $1 million attempted murder warrant from the Thursday shooting, the Sun-Times reports. He also has an outstanding $50,000 warrant for a separate domestic battery incident in mid-September.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Joliet Police Department at (815) 726-2491.
