Rory Feek won his first Grammy Award on Sunday. But the excitement that came with the accolade is apparently nothing compared to the thrill of watching his daughter grow up.
On Tuesday, the country singer appeared on the “Today” show, where he couldn’t help bust gush about his little girl, Indiana.
“[Indiana] turns 3 this Friday. So, as exciting as the Grammys are, that’s a little more exciting for us,” Rory told host Matt Lauer.
“She started taking steps and she really took about eight steps the other day at her little school,” Rory added. “I told her, I said, ‘I’m so proud of you, Indy.”
Rory also opened up about his late wife, Joey, who died last year after a battle with cancer. He credits her with inspiring his love for gospel music. The two recorded their Grammy-winning gospel album, “Hymns that Are Important to Us,” while Joey was undergoing cancer treatment. During his acceptance speech on Sunday, which was not televised, Rory dedicated the win to his late wife.
The country singer writes about the couple’s relationship in his new book, This Life I Live: One Man’s Extraordinary, Ordinary Life and the Woman Who Changed It Forever.
“I feel her everywhere I go,” he told Lauer. “I feel the choices that she made. I feel the strength that she had and the love that she had for me and my family and I carry it with me.”
The positivity Joey carried with her until her untimely death is a reminder for Rory to keep moving forward, he explained.
“My wife, for her to be so positive to the very end, even with a 2-year-old playing on the floor ― if she can be positive, I have nothing to be upset about,” Rory said.
