Rose McGown does not think Caitlyn Jenner understands what being a woman is about.
Jenner was honored Nov. 9 at Glamour's 2015 Women of the Year Awards for her work in spreading awareness and advocacy for the transgender community. During her acceptance speech, the former Olympian discussed her long and isolating journey, and how she hopes her public transition can help others.
"Maybe this is why God put me on this earth -- to tell my story, to be authentic to myself about who I am," she said. "And maybe in doing that, maybe you can make a difference in the world."
However, McGowan seemed to take issue with a part of Jenner's speech focused on appearance, during which she said: "[A]ll these new questions came into my life. People going: What's your style? What are you going to wear? Who are your heroes? Are you a feminist?"
In a since-deleted Facebook post, McGowan wrote:
Caitlyn Jenner you do not understand what being a woman is about at all. You want to be a woman and stand with us – well learn us. We are more than deciding what to wear. We are more than the stereotypes foisted upon us by people like you. You’re a woman now? Well f**king learn that we have had a VERY different experience than your life of male privilege. Being a woman comes with a lot of baggage. The weight of unequal history. You’d do well to learn it. You’d do well to wake up. Woman of the year? Not by a long f**king shot.
McGowan backtracked, per Us Weekly, by saying she appreciates what Jenner has done for the trans community, but that "comments like hers have consequences for other women" and lead to "more stereotyping."
A rep for the star was not immediately available for comment.
