A British animal charity drives home its message that “a dog is for life, not just for Christmas” with its tearjerking new holiday ad.

Released on Thursday, the commercial from the England and Wales’ Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals begins with a little boy receiving a stuffed toy puppy on Christmas Day.

Check out the ad here:

After playing with the toy, which he names Woody, the youngster leaves him in a park. The battered pup is heartbreakingly scooped up and dumped in the trash.

Luckily for Woody, he’s saved by an official for the RSPCA and taken in for surgery. He then recovers enough to be given his forever home, but with a wonderful twist.

The ad was well received on Twitter:

It forms part of the RSPCA’s “Kindness at Christmas” campaign, which aims “to help the thousands of animals who are facing neglect and cruelty over the festive season.”

Woody represents all the animals that the RSPCA cares for, from exotic pets, horses and small animals to dogs, cats, rabbits and everything in between,” the charity wrote on YouTube.
