A runaway dog who miraculously managed to remain unscathed by rush-hour traffic on Chicago's Stevenson Expressway was rescued and taken to an animal hospital Tuesday.
A small, white dog was first spotted around 6:45 a.m. on the Stevenson Expressway, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
The dog snarled traffic and avoided being cornered by Illinois State Police and Department Of Transportation crews on the expressway before exiting to Harlem Avenue, according to ABC Chicago.
About an hour -- and five miles -- after the dog was first spotted, it was tracked near Harlem and 65th Street, where the pup finally surrendered to a Good Samaritan who had been chasing after it, according to the station.
That Good Samaritan, Ed Kostro, took the dog to a veterinarian's office where he was examined, WGN reports.
The dog, a Bichon Frise-Poodle mix nicknamed "Rags" for now and thought to be about 2 years old, had been living on the streets for about a month but was in good health -- aside from some dehydration and exhaustion.
Kostro previously rescued pets in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.
