'Rush' Trailer: Chris Hemsworth Is Off To The Races (VIDEO)

Thor Goes Racing For Oscar-Winning Director

From wielding Mjölnir to grabbing the checkered flag: Chris Hemsworth is set for his fastest role yet. The Australian actor plays famed English Formula 1 driver James Hunt in "Rush," Ron Howard's new racing drama set for release later this year.

Universal has released the first "Rush" trailer, which highlights the rivalry between Hunt and Niki Lauda ("Inglourious Basterds" co-star Daniel Bruhl), which almost led to Lauda's death.

Peter Morgan, who wrote the script for Howard's adaptation of "Frost/Nixon," handled screenplay duties for "Rush." From the film's IMDb synopsis:

Set against the sexy, glamorous golden age of Formula 1 racing in the 1970s. Based on the true story of a great sporting rivalry between handsome English playboy James Hunt (Hemsworth), and his methodical, brilliant opponent Niki Lauda, (Bruhl). The story follows their distinctly different personal styles on and off the track, their loves and the astonishing 1976 season in which both drivers were willing to risk everything to become world champion in a sport with no margin for error: if you make a mistake, you die.

"Rush" is set for release on Sept. 20. The film also co-stars Olivia Wilde, as films released in 2013 are wont to do. Watch the "Rush" trailer above.
