Why Russell Simmons Wants Trump To Win The GOP Nomination

"All he can do for us is win the primary. That would be fantastic."

Def Jam co-founder Russell Simmons wants Donald Trump to win the GOP nomination, but that doesn't mean he dreams of seeing The Donald in the White House.

Instead, Simmons, who joined HuffPost Live to discuss his new book The Happy Vegan, hopes a Trump-led GOP ticket could pave the way for a Democratic candidate to take the general election.

"All [Trump] can do for us is win the primary. That would be fantastic," Simmons told host Alyona Minkovski. "Even Bernie Sanders could beat him, and that would be great. And if Hillary Clinton beats him, I hope she adopts some of Bernie's ideas, and that would be great too."

Simmons came out in opposition to Trump's divisive language last year when he wrote an open letter begging him to "stop fueling fires of hate" with his rhetoric. The New York Times-bestselling author acknowledged that Trump's views have garnered quite a following, but he doesn't expect the momentum to continue much longer.

"He's representing a segment of the population, more than we thought, but certainly not enough to win. This country is smarter than that," he said.
