Russia's Anti-Gay Laws, Vodka Boycott Discussed On 'The Rubin Report'

Will Worldwide Boycotts Impact Russia's Stance On The Gay Community?

The worldwide boycott against Stolichnaya vodka in response to the Russian government’s anti-gay crackdown was the subject of a spirited "Rubin Report" debate this week.

Host Dave Rubin spoke at length about the boycott, as well as Russia's pledged discriminatory stance towards the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, alongside TV personality Dave Holmes and comedian Jenn Hoffman.

"These kinds of things affect the wrong people," Holmes noted. "I don't think Vladimir Putin is going to be too bothered by it ... it seems to me that a boycott is something you do when you don't like an episode of 'Modern Family' ... this is a serious thing."

Still, he added, "If [the boycott] makes people take notice, then it's a good thing."

Meanwhile, Hoffman compared the vodka boycott to the media firestorm over Chick-fil-A's anti-gay views last year, noting, "In the end, Chick-fil-A still prevailed ... the media awareness is great, it's great that people feel like they're doing something, but...it isn't going to affect any social policy, enact any change or anything real."
