In just a few short years, Ryan Gosling has managed to do what many actors spend a life time pursuing: with his dramatic leads in "Half Nelson," and "Blue Valentine," quirky roles in films like "Lars and the Real Girl," and major heartthrob turn in "The Notebook," Gosling has become beloved in both the indie and mainstream film worlds, allowing him to shift back and forth between art house and big budget.
Now, as he looks to continue his critical darling run as an actor, he's set to add a major new field to his CV: major motion picture director.
Deadline.com reports that Gosling will get behind the camera for an upcoming remake of the 1980 film, "The Idolmaker," the thinly veiled biopic of famed music scout Bob Marcucci. In fact, the original film was the major motion picture directorial debut for Taylor Hackford, who went on to helm, "An Officer and a Gentleman," and "Ray," among others, and is now head of the Directors Guild of America.
So, big shoes to fill for Gosling.
Luckily, he'll be giving himself direction, as he's also set to star in the film. In the original, Ray Sharkey played Vincent Vacari, the Marcucci character, while Peter Gallager played one of his young stars.
It'll be a jam packed next few months Gosling; he'll be debuting his Steve Carell-costarring comedy "Crazy, Stupid, Love.," and his indie stunt man thriller "Drive," and has recently wrapped work on the political film "The Ides of March" with George Clooney.
Now, he's beginning production on "Logan's Run," and just signed on to re-team with his "Blue Valentine" director Derek Cianfrance in "The Place Beyond The Pines," which may co-star Bradley Cooper. Gosling is also rumored to be facing off with Sean Penn in the mob-thriller "Gangster Squad."
