Returning from the Olympics with gold medals around his neck, Ryan Lochte hoped for a fresh start out of the water and in front of TV cameras. However, after a shaky debut working as a special Fashion Week correspondent for E! News, Ryan’s TV future doesn’t look so bright.
“It always amazes me that because you are wildly successful in sports, you think you can suddenly become a TV host,” Amy Rosenblum, who runs media training company Media Masters, tells me. “It takes years of training to be a great TV host. It’s a real skill that has to be learned and practiced over and over. No one becomes an overnight success on TV -- behind the scenes, they have been learning their craft for years.”
The New York Post reported that the network was already regretting its decision to hire Ryan, but a representative for E! calls the claim “inaccurate.”
“Be careful what you say 'yes' to,” warns Rosenblum. “It is better to pass on an opportunity than say 'yes' and do a terrible job. Remember, tape lives forever online. Before anyone hires you again, they will be able to watch what you did last. In this business, you are only as good as your last hit!”
