Sagrada Familia To Be Completed By 2026, Or 2028

La Sagrada Familia, one of the most beautiful buildings finally got a completion date this week, over 140 years after construction began.

Joan Rigol, the President of the Sagrada Familia Trust, claimed that the landmark could be completed between 2026 and 2028, the Daily Mail reports.

The basilica receives roughly 2 million visitors a year.

Its architect, Gaudi, first built the church's crypt, which was completed in 1889. Gaudi only lived to see the Nativity facade completed in 1925, as he was hit by a tram on June 10, 1926. When he was hit, he looked so impoverished, it took doctors hours to realize who their victim was, the Guardian reports. He was buried on June 12 in the Carmen Chapel inside the crypt, where his remains can be found to this day.

Eight of the basilica's 18 planned towers are complete, with the tallest meant to be completed in seven years. The tower will stand at roughly 557 feet upon completion, making it Barcelona's highest point.

In 2010, Pope Benedict XVI traveled to Barcelona to designate the church as a basilica.
