Salma Hayek Calls Attention To Violence Against Women At The UN (VIDEO)

Salma Hayek Calls For Respect For Women

Salma Hayek will not stand for domestic violence against women and has come in front of the United Nations to express her concerns.

In a meeting with world leaders at the UN, where she had been invited as a presenter during the celebration of the Avon Communication Awards, the Mexican star took the opportunity to talk about the wave of violence that shakes our society and is tearing apart families worldwide, the Associated Press reports.

In a moving speech, with her voice breaking at times, the actress and producer talked about her personal experiences with this social problem and explained it needs to be addressed especially by men.

"The important thing of being here today and commiting to this cause is that you need a lot of support, not just today but every day. It especially needs support from men!," Hayek told AP.

The artist also made sure to make a call to international leaders on the need to unite and educate women around the world on the issue.

Not every country in the world has a problem with hunger, but every place in the world has a problem with domestic violence,” she said as part of her speech.

According to Women’s Wear Daily, Salma has aligned herself with women’s causes since she was 17 years old, and has also worked with the Avon Foundation for Women on the cause since 2004, when she was named a brand spokeswoman.

As part of the campaign to fight domestic violence, the star is also supporting the company’s fundraising program by promoting the purchase of their annual “Empowerment Charm Necklace.”
