When Sam Smith took the stage to sing his James Bond theme song "Writing's On the Wall" at the 88th annual Academy Awards on Sunday, nobody expected (ex-"Spectre"-d?) his performance to be so ... what's the word ... rough?
“It was the worst moment of my life,” the 23-year-old, who took home the Oscar for Best Original Song later in the night, told the BBC after the ceremony. (To which we say, JUSTICE 4 GAGA. Moving on.) "Singing was horrible. I hated every minute."
The British singer has been vocal about his distaste for the ballad in the past, telling British talk show host Graham Norton back in October that the song is particularly difficult to perform.
"I’ve only actually sung the song once, really. Because I did the demo in the studio, and they used that. It is horrible to sing. Horrible,” Smith revealed. “I almost regret -- no, I don’t regret,” he joked. “It’s just so high. I have to grab my balls; it’s awful.”
After his time on stage, Smith's Oscar night went from bad to worse. During his acceptance speech, he incorrectly claimed that he was possibly the first openly gay man to win an Oscar. His comments immediately drew fire from social media, with many users citing Elton John and Dustin Lance Black as examples of gay men who've won an Oscar before Smith.
Black took it one step further, calling Smith out publicly for forgetting his moment of Oscars glory (and texting his fiancé, Tom Daley), but later backtracked after Smith issued an apology.
