And in today's "Sarah Palin Is Only Qualified To Run A Child's Lemonade Stand And Little Else" news...
Palin's currently visiting America's most American sites in America on a self-proclaimed Freedom Trail tour--that's Alaskan for "Media Troll Campaign" -- which took her Wednesday to Ellis Island, our monument to immigrants and their struggle for a better life, and the place where a staggering 100 million Americans can trace their beginnings in this country. To honor that struggle, Palin weighed in before her visit on the DREAM Act, which Democrats want to reintroduce into the Senate:
"The immigrants of the past, they had to literally and figuratively stand in line to become U.S. citizens. I'd like to see that continue," Palin said. "And unfortunately, the DREAM Act kind of usurps that-the system that is a legal system to make sure that immigrants who want to be here legally, working hard, producing and supplying revenue and resources for their families, that they're able to do that right and legally. Unfortunately, the DREAM Act doesn't accomplish that."
Now, I'm guessing in the "lots of things" that Sarah Palin reads but has trouble naming, you won't find the "Brief History of Ellis Island" among them, which states that those immigrants of the past to whom she's referring had to literally stand in line for "only a few short hours" before they were granted citizenship:
Despite the island's reputation as an "Island of Tears", the vast majority of immigrants were treated courteously and respectfully, and were free to begin their new lives in America after only a few short hours on Ellis Island. Only two percent of the arriving immigrants were excluded from entry. The two main reasons why an immigrant would be excluded were if a doctor diagnosed that the immigrant had a contagious disease that would endanger the public health or if a legal inspector thought the immigrant was likely to become a public charge or an illegal contract laborer.
Contrast this with the "line" that would-be immigrants seeking permanent residency under the DREAM Act would have to stand in, which would require them to:
have come to the country as a child (15 and under)be under the age of 29have lived in the country 5 years or morehave graduated from an American high school or obtained a GEDbe a person of "good moral character," as determined by the Department of Homeland Securityundergo security and law-enforcement background checksundergo a medical examinationregister for the Selective Servicenot have committed a felony or three misdemeanorsnot be likely to become a public chargenot have engaged in voter fraud or unlawful votingnot have committed marriage fraudnot have abused a student visanot have engaged in persecutionnot pose a public health riskAnd if and only if those criteria are met, then DREAM Act beneficiaries must still:
graduate from a two-year community college orcomplete at least two years towards a four-year degree orserve two years in the U.S. militaryNot to mention that the fulfillment of this commitment is to take place within a 6 year "conditional" period, and only after that can a DREAM Act beneficiary even apply for a green card. Yet Palin maintains a 3 hour wait at Ellis Island is truly waiting one's turn, while 6 years under the DREAM Act is cutting the line?
So not only are Palin's reading skills sub-par, her 'rithmetic sucks too. On second thought, don't put her in charge of that lemonade stand either.
