'Scandal': Fitz Breaks It Off With Olivia, Deals With Supreme Court Justice (VIDEO)

'Scandal': Fitz Makes Some Shocking Decisions

A shocking turn of events has hardened Fitzgerald Grant far more than anyone could have anticipated on "Scandal." Certainly Olivia didn't expect it. Earlier in the episode, he'd been begging her to wait for him. He knew Ellie had induced her labor early to try and manipulate him, and it sickened him. He was determined to go through with the divorce.

By the end, at the funeral of Supreme Court Justice Verna Thornton, he was singing a very different tune. Olivia had finally decided what she wanted, and it was him. She told him she would wait for him.

"I don’t know what I was thinking," he said coldly to her. "Screwing your mistress is one thing, but marrying her? That’s political suicide, really."

What happened? A conversation with Verna Thorton is what happened. In it, Verna confessed to everything: trying to kill the president in order to protect her legacy, and the voter fraud -- which just happened to include Olivia Pope. Her final act was going to be to come clean publicly about it all.

That's when Fitz made a dark decision. He denied her oxygen and watched her die so that her confession would end with his ears. Now his hands are even dirtier than Mellie's or Olivia's. How will this change him in the long run? Will anyone ever find out what he did?

Expect the unexpected every week on "Scandal," Thursdays at 10 p.m. EST on ABC.
