On March 5, 2001, 15-year-old Charles "Andy" Williams opened fire in Santana High School in Santee, California, killing two students and wounding 13 other people.
In this exclusive deleted scene from the season finale of "Our America with Lisa Ling," Lisa Ling speaks over the phone with Williams (who is now 27 and serving a 50-years-to-life sentence in California's Ironwood State Prison) about the shooting and how it affected his relationship with his father, Jeff, who had been a single dad since Andy was 3.
"I know it's been a very long time and you have had many years to think about what happened," she says, "but is there any way you can talk about why you think you might have done what you did?"
"Dyin' seemed like a good option for whatever reason," says Williams in the clip. "I didn't know how to communicate that somethin' really, really bad was goin' on. I didn't know how to talk about it. So I felt like the easy way out would be to not talk about it."
"When these kinds of things happen, immediately people think that the parents should have borne more responsibility," says Ling. "Was there anything that you think your father could have done to prevent you from doing what you did?"
"Looking back, he did every single thing he could," says Williams. "My dad noticed my grades slippin'; he goes, 'You're skipping school.' I would come home with bruises and lie to him. A lot of people noticed a lot of things, but for whatever reason, I refused to talk about it."
As Ling points out in the video, Jeff will likely never see his son outside of their regularly scheduled visits. She asks Williams, "Being in prison and your father's diligent visits to you... do you think that that has changed your relationship with your dad?"
"I've learned the meaning of unconditional love," Williams responds. "He definitely had reason to wash his hands and not claim the incident and not claim me. But it's definitely cool that no matter... thick or thin, I'm his boy."
