Sci Fi Movie Soundtrack Favorites: A Spotify Playlist (LISTEN)

What does science fiction sound like?

Sci fi movies have a history of weird, imaginative soundtracks, possibly because we're not sure what kind of music will come out of advanced civilizations of the sort portrayed in many sci fi movies.

In the Spotify playlist below, we've compiled our sci fi movie favorites, from familiar favorites to little-known gems.

Some are scores, like John Williams' unforgettable themes from Jurassic Park and Star Wars. Others were repurposed for use in a particular scene. These include Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki's "Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima," which accompanies a blistering battle sequence in Children of Men, and ELO's "Mr. Blue Sky," which was used in trailers for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind despite never actually appearing on the film's soundtrack.

Still others are futuristic rearrangements of classical pieces, like the "Suicide Scherzo" from A Clockwork Orange, in which Beethoven is adapted for synthesizer, and the "Diva Dance" from The Fifth Element, in which an aria by baroque composer Gaetano Donizetti takes on an alien groove.
