Rep. Scott DesJarlais (R-Tenn.) told an 11-year-old girl who spoke out at a town hall meeting last week that her undocumented father should be deported, saying "we need to follow" current immigration laws.
“I have papers ... I have a dad and he's undocumented. What can I do so he can stay with me?” 11-year-old Josie Molina asked the congressman at the meeting in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
“Thank you for being here and thank you for coming forward and speaking," DesJarlais said. "This is a big intimidating crowd and appreciate you coming forward and asking your question, but the answer still kinda remains the same, that we have laws, and we need to follow those laws and you know, that’s where we’re at.”
His remarks prompted applause from the large Tea Party contingent at the event.
Progressive Populist reported that Molina's father is currently facing deportation proceedings, and as a result, the 11-year-old is seeing a child psychologist to deal with the stress.
Interestingly, DesJarlais' "laws are laws" line may not extend beyond his current political work. A few months ago, the former physician was fined by medical authorities for having sexual affairs with his patients. HuffPost reported last year that the pro-life congressman had pressured one of his mistresses, also patient of his, to get an abortion.
