Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) castigated the press this weekend for fixating on issues that were irrelevant to most Americans. “I would defy you to come to Wisconsin. You could ask 100 people, and not one of them would say that this is a significant issue," he said, attempting to make a point by not answering questions about President Barack Obama's faith, his love of America, and evolution.
But the governor's campaign apparently had no problems fixating on those same questions when it sent a fundraising plea to Walker's supporters Sunday night.
Walker "refuses to be distracted by the small, petty, and pale ideas that the 'gotcha' headline writers for the Liberal Media want to talk about. He refuses to be drawn into the sideshow of answering pointless questions about whether and how much President Obama loves our country. To Governor Walker, what matters are ideas, issues, his record, and results," wrote Friends of Scott Walker, the organization that runs his re-election campaign.
If any of the recipients weren't already aware of his comments about the president's faith or love of country, they probably are now.
In taking a shot at the press, Walker is attempting to present himself as above the din of regular beltway politics. Indeed, much of his likely campaign for president will probably center around his Washington, D.C. outsider status. Raising funds off his comments, however, may undercut that argument.
"Now is the time to stand up against the publicity hounds and the journalistic pack, and help Governor Walker fight back," Walker's campaign wrote in the email, asking supporters for contributions. "Your support will show the clueless and mindless journalistic herd that you know what matters most and that it is not the pointless minutiae that they are pushing."
