WASHINGTON -- Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker (R) appeared on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" on Friday to discuss the outcome of Tuesday's recall elections, where four of six Republican state senators held onto their seats in races against Democratic challengers.
Voters petitioned nine total recall elections, with six Republican and three Democratic state senators facing challenges. The petitions came in the wake of Walker signing controversial budget legislation into law -- which eliminated the collective bargaining rights of state workers. The measure was passed by the majority of the Republican state senators in an 18-1 vote.
One Democratic state senator, Dave Hansen, defeated a GOP challenger to keep his seat in a July recall election. The other two Democrats up for recall, Jim Holperin and Robert Wirch, will face their opponents in general election contests on August 16.
Though this round of recalls did not result in Democrats retaking control of the state Senate, many Democratic constituents have seen the recall movement as the first step in an effort mounting to recall Walker.
Walker didn't seem worried about the outcome of the races, saying he thought the message of the recalls was to "focus on jobs, focus on balancing the budget."
"But they also told us not just in Tuesday's results but I think they told us in the months leading up to it, they want us to do more to work together and so that's exactly what we're going to do," he said.
