With the negative health effects of smoking cigarettes widely documented, it's not surprising that inhaling secondhand smoke can also impact your health. But a 2010 study that attempted to measure the impact produced startling results: Worldwide, more than 600,000 people die due to secondhand smoke every year, the AP reported.

Much of the research surrounding secondhand smoke has focused on the effects on children. Around 40 percent of children regularly breathe it in, greatly increasing their risk of numerous health ailments, mental health problems and for becoming smokers themselves.
