Over the past few years, Selena Gomez has become a tabloid staple -- but that's never what she wanted. In fact, it's far from it.

While everyone was preoccupied with her relationship with a certain Canadian pop star (who recently faced a major invasion of privacy himself), Gomez was left to prove that she was more than just Justin Bieber's girlfriend.

"I'd sit down in an interview and get the most harshly asked questions," she said in a recent interview with Refinery 29. "Of course I got my heart broken. Of course I was pissed about it. There, everybody has it. I was so disappointed, because I never wanted my career to be a tabloid story."

When she released her song "The Heart Wants What It Wants" last year, it was clear the singer and actress was ready to move on from her former high-profile relationship. She put her story out there for everyone to hear, letting go of the past.

Gomez now seems to be at peace with everything that's been thrown her way over the years. She's setting the record straight and turning the conversation back around.

“At this point, there is no anger. There's closure in a very good, healthy way,” she explained of her relationship with Bieber. “We’ve seen each other. I'm always encouraging and I am proud of his journey. I think people are making it out to be something that is more tragic than it really was. We grew up together. We both made mistakes. That's it."

A message to potential suitors: Gomez is happily single at the moment. "Don't try to date me right now," she said.

In the interview, the "Spring Breakers" star also opens up about how she feels about her fellow Disney alums, her new album, "Revival," and embracing her sexuality.

"It's not something where I'm like, let me glorify what I do in the bedroom. But I think I have a very healthy perspective on my sexuality. It's part of being an adult, and I'm still figuring out how to be one of those, too."
