The explanation is very simple, Selena Gomez evolved from a Disney girl next door to a wild sex bomb in the new R-rated independent film, “Spring Breakers.” In the movie, she plays a sexy, heavily-armed college student on a sexy and violent Florida coast vacation, financed by a diner robbery, three friends and some illegal drugs.
She said, at the film’s Hollywood premiere, that she felt she’s getting old enough (she’s 20) to push herself to get into a little bit more of an indie film world and that it’s been “a little awkward, but great.”

Selena Gomez was born on July 22, 1992 in Grand Prairie, Texas. She was named after the late Texan singer Selena Quintanilla-Perez and her name “Selena” means “moon” in Greek. Her father, Ricardo Joel Gomez was a Mexican and her mother Amanda, an Italian-American, was a classical theater actress who gave birth to Selena at the young age of 16. The actress’ parents divorced when Gomez was five-years-old and she was raised as an only child by her mother after that.
Selena Gomez’s story is reminiscent of the Ugly Duckling tale, she herself described in an interview to the Daily Mail. She said that she was not a popular girl and barely had two friends as a child, but was protected by her cousin, the popular girl in school. “I was never the girl who thought I need to make sure I look like all the other girls. I think you look best when you stand out.” In a 2009 People magazine interview, Gomez said that she developed an early interest in performing arts by watching her mother acting in theater productions.
Gomez entered the acting world as Gianna in the popular children’s television series, “Barnie & Friends” at the age of seven. After two seasons, she was ready to leave the program. She acted in “Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over” (2003), “Walker, Texas Ranger: Trial by Fire” (2005) and played the principal role in “Brain Zapped,” a made for television film.
It wasn’t until 2004 that she was discovered by Disney in a nation-wide casting call in her hometown of Grand Prairie, Texas. In 2005, she participated as a supporting character in the Disney Channel series and, in 2006, in an episode in the second season of “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody.” The following year was the year of her first main role in Disney’s series “Wizards of Waverly Place,” where she was assigned the role of Alex Russo, the second daughter of a family of wizards who live on Waverly Place, a neighborhood in New York. The series was a success and had four seasons issued originally from October 2007 to January 2012.
In 2012, Gomez starred in four films, including the aforementioned “Spring Breakers.” She also lent her voice in an animated 3D movie and made a cameo appearance in “Aftershock”. All these productions show a Selena Gomez venturing away from her childhood and her Disney personality to start an adult career as a daring, mature actress despite her baby face.
Gomez actually began moving in that direction as Justin Bieber’s now ex-girlfriend. “Honestly, it’s been a weird transition. You never really know what’s right or wrong and you can only do the best you can,” she said as her squeaky-clean image faded.
It seems that Selena Gomez has started on a new path to adulthood and we expect to see her develop her career with great roles that let her grow as an actress and continue to allow her to be a star.
