Since the election, parents across the political spectrum have told us their children are asking, “Why did someone who says mean things become president?”

They weren’t sure how to respond to this question because we are taught from the time we are in preschool to have good manners:

  • Treat others the way you want to be treated.
  • Be kind.
  • Be honest.
  • Be respectful.
  • Listen quietly.
  • Cooperate.
  • Share.
  • Respect others’ bodies.
  • Respect others’ things.
  • Stand up to bullies.

Our team at Journey Counseling Services offers this suggestion for children and parents:

Send Mr. Trump a letter and let him know your hopes and concerns.

The process of discussing good manners in our families, and then writing and sending a letter, can be an empowering and respectful way to express the complicated emotions our children are experiencing.
