Sergey Semenov, a Russian photographer, won first prize in the amateur category of the Epson International Photographic Pano Awards for an incredible panoramic, aerial view of Manhattan:
Semenov constructed the panorama by putting together thousands of photos he took during helicopter tours of the Big Apple in 2011.
"I shoot landscapes, spheres from helicopter, gig-pixel panoramas as well as manipulate Photoshop and prepare the photos to be printed in a huge size and organize photo-exhibitions," Semenov wrote of his work.
Panoramas are usually spherical. Here Semenov "flattened" his image, according to the Daily Mail.
And as Alexis Madrigal over at The Atlantic observes, this "flattening" has a familiar effect:
It's worth noting that this image -- while definitely real -- also has some serious distortions of building height. I don't know the exact specifics, but think of a world map. You know how it makes Greenland seem big in some projections? That's kind of what we're seeing here.
