Shailene is no stranger to dropping strange comments. Just last year, the actress graced us with beauty tips about sunbathing your vagina and eating clay. But her latest mic drop is particularly confusing.
In a recent interview with Nylon, the star said:
"The reason why I don't like to say that I am a feminist or I am not a feminist is because to me it's still a label. I do not want to be defined by one thing. Why do we have to have that label to divide us? We should all be able to embrace one another regardless of our belief system and regardless of the labels that we have put upon ourselves."
Woodley is known for walking to the beat of her own drum, but this time it seems she missed a beat. She makes yet another star who seems to have confused feminism with man-hating. Taylor Swift made this gaff in 2012 and has since retracted her statement. Similarly, Lady Gaga used to hold that she supported men too much to be a feminist before eventually owning up to the label.
Still, it seems strange that a woman playing strong female roles such as Tris in Divergent is shying away from a 'label' that merely seeks to empower women.
This isn't the first time Woodley has had the opportunity to share her views on the f-word. In May 2014, in an interview for Time, she responded to the question of whether or not she considers herself a feminist by saying:
"No, because I love men, and I think the idea of 'raise women to power, take the men away from the power' is never going to work out because you need balance."
It seems Woodley isn't quite ready to pull at TSwift and flip flop on the issue. Such a shame considering Insurgent, the sequel to Divergent, where Tris is said to be more badass than ever, just hit theaters.
