Not everyone was a fan of Shakira’s recent steamy music video alongside Rihanna -- but the singer’s response to the councilman who sought to ban her so-called “simply disgusting” clip is pure perfection.
During a press conference held prior to the opening of her organization’s newest school in Cartagena on Monday, the singer expressed her surprise at the popularity of her “Can’t Remember To Forget You” music video featuring Rihanna and even responded to the Colombian councilman who accused her of promoting “lesbianism” in the video, EFE reported.
Earlier this month, conservative evangelical Councilman Marco Fidel Ramirez of Bogotá denounced the video via Twitter, saying it was “SIMPLY DISGUSTING” and an “unabashed glorification of lesbianism.” Ramirez campaigned online to get Colombia’s national television authority to ban the music video on the grounds that it was immoral and promoted lesbianism and tobacco consumption.
When asked about the video, Shaki first revealed that she was surprised at how many views it had received but that it was a “reflection of a good choreography” and the positive energy that came about from working with Rihanna.
“Since [Piqué] doesn’t let me do videos with men anymore, I have to make them with women,” the star joked at the press conference in Colombia.
Shakira visited her home country for the inauguration of Fundación Pies Descalzos' (Barefoot Foundation) new school in Cartagena, which will benefit around 1,700 children in the coastal city. Amid her comments on the video, the Barranquilla native addressed Ramirez’s critique with a question of her own.
“In a country like ours where there are so many needs: a health system that needs to be improved, an education system that needs to be expanded, employment that needs to be generated -- for a councilman to use his voice and his time to talk about a video by an artist like me means we’re not doing too well councilman-wise, right?,” Shaki told the press, according to EFE.
The “Can’t Remember To Forget You” video premiered on Jan. 30 and has had more than 150 million views on YouTube since its debut. Shakira released "Empire" on Tuesday, the second single off her upcoming self-titled album which shows the star's return to her rock ballad roots.
