A harrowing true tale of survival on "Adrift: 47 Days With Sharks" (Tue., 10 p.m. ET on Discovery). Through dramatic re-enactments for the "Shark Week" special, viewers saw the story of three World War II solders caught between two deadly enemies.
After their plane crashed into the ocean, the men found themselves surrounded by sharks circling the wreckage. And then things got worse.
A Japanese fighter plane spotted the wreckage. The soldiers had to duck under their raft when the planes flew over, during which they had to sometimes physically deal with the sharks. Miraculously, they survived both encounters and ultimately made their way to an island.
The two surviving soldiers at this point, though were only at the beginning of their story. They were captured by the Japanese and spent the next two years as prisoners of war. Their story of survival was made into the book "Unbroken" in 2010. That same year, though, Louis Zamperini, one of the survivors, rejected the term hero for living through their ordeal.
"I go to the VA hospital and I see a guy in wheelchairs with a leg off, two legs off, an arm off," he said. "To me the real heroes are people who lose their limbs and things like that."
