Shawn Johnson Named TODAY.com Special Correspondent For 2012 London Olympics

Shawn Johnson Joins 'Today' Show's Olympics Team

Olympic Gold Medalist Shawn Johnson will join Matt Lauer, Savannah Guthrie, Al Roker and Natalie Morales in London.

Johnson was selected as the morning show's first ever Today.com special correspondent for the 2012 London Olympic games. She will engage with "Today's" online audience by providing behind-the-scenes coverage through Twitter, Instagram, and other social media. Johnson will bring the athlete's perspective to Today.com's reporting, and contribute to the website's London blog.

Speaking of her new gig, Johnson said, "Participating in the Olympics holds such special memories for me. I am excited to return to the arena as a special correspondent for TODAY.com."

Lauer arrived in London on Monday and was joined by the rest of the "Today" show gang on Wednesday. The morning show will serve as a key part of NBC's coverage of the 2012 Olympic Games. NBC will broadcast the Olympics opening ceremony on Friday, July 27 from 7:30 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. (EST).
