It was hard for fans, as well.

Shonda Rhimes admitted that Sara Ramirez's exit from "Grey's Anatomy" after 10 seasons was a shock at the Vulture Festival in NYC this weekend.

The "Grey's" creator, showrunner and writer said that she found out about Ramirez's decision to leave around three days prior to her departure (which is still more time than Michael Strahan gave Kelly Ripa).

"This [exit] was different because it wasn’t a big planned thing," Rhimes said, via Us Weekly. "I had a different plan going and when Sara came in and said, ‘I really need to take this break,' I was lucky that we’d shot the end of the season with her going to New York."

The creator added, "I felt really good that we had shot that ending and that she said she wanted to take this break and we were able to give it to her because I love the woman and I want to do everything for her. It all worked out in that sense."

Dr. Callie Torres Ramirez tweeted out her love and thanks to the cast, crew and fans after last week's Season 12 finale:

It seems there are no hard feelings between the two (à la Patrick Dempsey's tragic ending and exit). Rhimes wrote a sweet post on Twitter following Ramirez's announcement, giving us all the feels.

"Dr. Callie Torres came into our lives dancing it out in her underwear almost a decade ago, and I could not be happier or more proud of her journey," Rhimes said. "Sara Ramirez’s performance inspired me as well as millions of fans each week. We wish her the best on her well-deserved time off. I will miss Callie tremendously, but am excited for what the future holds for Sara. She will always have a home at Shondaland."

Oh, we'll be ready for that "Scandal" and/or "How To Get Away With Murder" cameo when Callie Torres is ready to return to TV!
