Shorts are no doubt a beloved summer staple but they aren't the first thing you grab when dressing for work, a night out on the town or any other gotta-look-nice occasion. The leg-baring garments seem too revealing for the boardroom and too casual for the cocktail bar.
But, as the saying goes: things aren't always what they seem. Chic shorts suits have been popping up on the runway over the past few seasons, which got us thinking about how to move shorts from the casual corner of our closets to the sophisticated section. To that end, we asked style expert and founder of GLAM4GOOD, Mary Alice Stephenson, to offer up some sage advice on to rock shorts and look pretty, polished and professional.

For Work :
"Look for shorts in hip-slung or loose flare styles. It’s important to keep the suit from looking too sexy and revealing. You can throw on a menswear-inspired, over-sized jacket to keep things from not looking so skin tight. Don’t forget a belt and throw on a pendant necklace and a pare of loafers or ladylike pumps."
For A Fancy Brunch:
"Swap out your blazer for a long trench or chunky knit sweater. The look is casual, but still sexy -- and a great way to show some skin but still be covered up and comfortable."
For Date Night:
"Wear your shorts suit Helmut Newton style -- no shirt underneath and a sexy pair of heels. Button up the jacket, slick back your hair and pop on a hot lip color and hit the town. No jewelry needed when our legs say it all."
