As Cashmere Cat faced a sold out crowd at the Wiltern on Friday night, there was an ambitious task facing the young DJ. With a relatively short discography and an under the radar presence in pop music circles, the young producer had a lot to prove on the big stage.

Yet, following the debut of his first album last month, the Norwegian talent impressed with a set worthy of praise from a broad range of audiences. Interspersing his biggest hits with remixes of popular songs, the young DJ crafted a cohesive set that attendees could dance to, sing along to, and thoroughly enjoy throughout.

After a strong and energetic opening set from British DJ Sophie (a producer on Cat’s new album 9) Cashmere Cat quickly engaged audiences with Mirror Maru, the popular single off of his 2012 EP sharing the same name. Highlights of the night came from “Wild Love”, a single released late last year with a heavy beat and strong vocals from The Weeknd, and a remix of Kanye West’s Waves, which brought screams and cheers from the audience. The night ended with 9 (after Coachella), Cat’s most recent single and one of his strongest releases to date. Silhouetted by pink smoke, he danced to the track with Sophie, a featured artist on the track, as .

With an ability to engage a large crowd while simultaneously displaying artistry and talent, the night served as a masterful demonstration of Cashmere Cat’s readiness for mainstream success. While Cat has been able to secure popular features such as Ariana Grande and The Weeknd, he never cedes the central role on the tracks he releases, reminding listeners of the talent behind the vocals. This talent was on full display at The Wiltern, without the guise of the popular features he attracts and yet with an equally impressive and entertaining concert.

The show doubled as an exhibition of the impressive portfolio Cat has cultivated, and a presentation of his precocity. Leaving the show left for certain that Cashmere Cat is a force to be reckoned with on the verge of great musical success.
