Without his wife and family, a long way from home and in the dead of night, no one can blame Sting for feeling in need of a little company.

But Trudie Styler and their children might feel less inclined to be understanding when they learn where he ended up in Hamburg in the early hours of Wednesday.

The father of six was spotted leaving one of Germany's most notorious brothels after a concert during the Police's reunion tour.

He was pictured apparently trying to duck down in the back seat of a car.

Shakira may get high grades in singing and swiveling her hips, but what about ancient Western history?

For the past month, the Colombian pop star has been taking a class at the University of California, Los Angeles, called "Introduction to Western Civilization: Ancient Civilizations from Prehistory to Circa A.D. 843."

"She went when she finished her tour, for the summer," Shakira's manager Fifi Kurzman told The Associated Press.

Film industry knows how to throw a good party. So I usually spend most mornings sleeping in screening rooms in every prominent 'A' Festival. Not in Toronto. One movie that kept me awake on a Saturday morning at 10am is Persepolis, a highly stylized, black-and-white animation chronicling a young woman's search for her own voice in Taliban ruled Iran and later in Europe. This much-anticipated animated adaptation of Marjane Setrapi's acclaimed series of autobiographical graphic novels was such a delight. And I remain fascinated by contemporary Iranian cinema.

Another film that kept my colleagues awake was Gus Van Sant's Paranoid Park, a dark coming-of-age story of a troubled young boy who mistakenly kills a security guard and decides to keep this a secret. This promises to be as intriguing and controversial as auteur Gus Van Sant's previous masterpiece Elephant so I'll see it when it's available at The Auteurs.

The memory of September 11 has not dimmed the spirit of New Yorkers. How do I know? I am a New Yorker, born and bred, a former ad guy at Ogilvy and, now a film critic, or as I prefer to describe myself, a "film advocate" -- meaning simply, I only talk about movies I love -- a happy luxury, but undergirded by a serious goal.

I have a Quixote-like quest to have people appreciate the stories and excellence of the world's best movies, old and new, most of them now accessible on DVD, or even for downloading. After all, if our kids read literary classics to understand the tenor of a certain time and culture, why not do the same thing with great movies? While reading is vital, I'd submit that film is the most powerfully concentrated medium there is.
