Simon Cowell made headlines last year for his relationship with Lauren Silverman, a woman already married to one of his best friends.

In his first in-depth interview since the scandal, Cowell opened up about the relationship to the Mirror's Mark Jefferies, saying he "regrets" that the extramarital affair affected his relationship with friend Andrew Silverman.

“I regret that part,” said Cowell. “But then of course you have a baby and you look at the baby and you kinda go ‘this is what happened from it.’ In this situation you are not going to come out of this well because of the circumstances. It is not something I am proud of or wanted to happen in terms of hurting anyone. It just happened."

In the interview, Cowell also said he received a lot of backlash, but was able to move on from it: "You have to deal with it and man up to it. You have to accept the responsibility and the criticism," he said.

"All I can say is, my advice to you is if it happens to you, you just have to deal with it a day at a time and own up to your responsibilities.”

The music mogul is still with Silverman and they have one son together, Eric, born in February.
