Dramatic Video Captures Family’s Rescue From Car Swallowed By Sinkhole

"We were scared, because water began to filter into the vehicle."

Hero passersby rescued a family of three after its car was swallowed by a 16-foot-wide sinkhole in Peru.

Dramatic video posted online shows residents hauling a woman and then a man out of the vehicle in the northwestern city of Trujillo on Thursday.

Driver Edgar Orlando Bartolo Silva told Terra Peru he'd stopped the vehicle just seconds before it began sinking into the ground.

The car plunged backwards into the 9-foot-deep pit, and was left almost completely vertical.

Silva, his partner, Marisol Mercedes Gutierrez Siccha, and their 2-year-old daughter were trapped inside.

"Some people helped us, but we were scared, because water began to filter into the vehicle," he told Terra Peru.

It's unclear exactly when the couple's young daughter was lifted from the car, as her rescue does not appear on tape.

The trio suffered minor bumps and bruises, according to Radio Capital. They were taken to a local medical center as a precaution and discharged soon after.

Authorities later used a crane to haul the car out. The region has been hit by heavy rain and flooding in recent days, according to Sky News.

The sinkhole is believed to have been caused by a burst sewer pipe, local news agency Andina reported.
