'Sister Wives' Stunned By Warren Jeffs Scandal

The ugly side of polygamy reared its head and shocked the Brown family on "Sister Wives." Just like traditional two-party marriages, the success and health of any union is going to depend on the people involved. In the Brown family, they've developed a healthy and supportive dynamic. But when stories like the one involving Warren Jeffs come out, it paints an ugly picture that some apply to all polygamy.

Jeffs is currently serving a life sentence in Texas for fathering a child with a 15-year-old girl, who was also one of his followers in his Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The church is in disarray and has seen people fleeing, including some young girls who are telling horrific tales of their recent tribulations within the organization.

In this week's episode, some members of the Brown family met with some of those young women and were appalled by the stories that they heard. They couldn't believe that somebody could manipulate the situation so cruelly to their own benefit.

"Everybody’s judging me by this guy’s deeds, and not all polygamists are members of his sect, and not even the people in his sect are all like him," Kody said. "But when these abuses happen, sometimes people feel the need to leave the community, which I don’t blame them."

The Browns are members of the Apostolic United Brethren Church. While The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has officially rejected polygamy, the Brown family openly continues with the practice.

"Sister Wives" airs new episodes every Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on TLC.
