You know to stay away from caffeine and alcohol if you want a better night's sleep, but you could still be sabotaging your shuteye with your nighttime habits.

One common culprit? A dinner that's too heavy and too close to bedtime, says Carol Ash, D.O., director of sleep medicine at Meridian Health, who stopped by "Today" to talk sleep mistakes.

Ash explains that eating a late meal that's high in protein -- which takes more effort for the body to digest -- can actually keep us up later at night. She shares some other surprising sleep stealers in the clip above.
