The story of America's housing crisis often ends up being told in a stream of numbers -- hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt, thousands of foreclosures taking place every day.

But as the photos below show, there are also powerful images being created by this crisis. Sometimes the empty houses become symbolic of the human suffering involved, abandoned and in disrepair. And sometimes they become symbols of hope -- centers of activism and community resistance against losing more homes.
