A powerful earthquake shook the Solomon Islands to its core Wednesday, generating a massive tsunami that damaged scores of homes and killed at least five people.
Prime Minister Spokesman George Herming said most of the villagers had taken refuge to higher ground after two massive waves, each around five feet high, hit the western side of Santa Cruz Island, the Associated Press reported. More than between 70 and 80 homes and properties were damaged and dozens of people remain missing.
Located in the Ring of Fire in the Pacific Ocean, the Solomon Islands often host tectonic activity susceptible to large earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.
