Sonny Coates, Songwriter, Calls Mr. T His Style Icon (VIDEO)

He Took His Style Cues From Mr. T

If Sonny Coates' piercing blue eyes don't captivate you, his humble nature and smooth voice will. The musician, who does everything from songwriting to guitar playing, didn't realize he had musical talent until he was in college. And while the artist has a trained ear, he also has a trained eye and a unique sense of style.

He recently invited Stylelist Blogger Network members Elisa Goodkind and Lily Mandelbaum of StyleLikeU into his home to get a better understanding of where he came from and why he has a penchant for eclectic jewelry.

The Los Angeles native (who has since lived in Atlanta and Brooklyn) loves the idea of wearing Mr. T jewlery, but isn't about to copy someone else's style. Instead of wearing flashy bling like the icon, he puts his own spin on things, opting for tribal jewelry that has a "kingly" and "earthy" feel. He likes layering beaded necklaces and embroidered bracelets, while keeping his clothing neutral, favoring open knit sweaters and combat boots.

Although he loves fashion, he's open to new ideas in whatever form it comes. He always reads science fiction to remind him that things aren't always as bland as they may seem. As Coates says, "we are a lot more glorious than we know, a lot more strange, a lot more multi-faceted."

Watch the video above to find out why Mr. Coates believes that men are always trying to mimic women.
