Sounds Like Nina Dobrev Might Return For The Final Season Of 'The Vampire Diaries'

Elena Gilbert may be in a coffin, but there's still hope for her big return!

Elena Gilbert might be coming back to Mystic Falls.

According to TVLine, The CW is currently in negotiations with Nina Dobrev to get her to appear in the eighth and final season of “The Vampire Diaries.” The actress, who played Elena (and her various doppelgängers) on the show, left after Season 6 to pursue other projects.

“There are discussions going on with Nina,” CW president Mark Pedowitz told reporters Thursday during the Television Critics Association summer press tour. “We’d love to have Nina back. She was great for The CW. She was integral for ‘The Vampire Diaries.’”

Technically, Dobrev could revive her character, since she’s not officially ... well, dead. In the Season 6 finale, Elena’s life was tied to best friend and witch Bonnie’s (Kat Graham) in such a way that as long as Bonnie is alive, Elena will remain asleep. Elena’s body is currently in a coffin in the Salvatore family tomb, where it will be until Bonnie dies. So, if Dobrev were to come back, what would happen to Bonnie? We’d have to wait and see. Still, Pedowitz said that showrunner Julie Plec has a plan B just in case Dobrev doesn’t return.

“Hopefully she’ll be back, but should it not work out, Julie has planned a great series finale [that will satisfy fans],” he said.

The cast of the show recently said they’d be thrilled if Dobrev returned. During a discussion with TVLine at San Diego Comic-Con, Plec insisted the actress made an “emotional promise” to her that she hopes Dobrev keeps.

“There’s been friendship promises made, and now we’ll see if we can deliver on them,” she told TVLine’s Andy Swift as actor Zach Roerig, who plays Matt on the show, added, “At the end of the day, we’d love to have her back. This show wouldn’t be what it is without her.”

We couldn’t agree more.

No news yet from Nina Dobrev, but her rep told The Huffington Post that there was "nothing to share at this time." Fingers crossed!

The final season of “The Vampire Diaries” debuts Oct. 21.
