The Cheapest Way To Sous Vide At Home Is In A Slow Cooker

Another great reason to own a slow cooker.

There's no more perfect, more accurate way to cook your food than sous vide. It is the cooking method of haute cuisine, after all. That's probably why it's also one of the most expensive ways to prepare a meal. We're talking hundred dollar dinners here.

Or, at least, that's the way it used to be.

The good folks at Chow have figured out how to bring sous vide into everyone's home using little more than a slow cooker and a bit of ingenuity. You read that right, folks: You can turn your slow cooker machine into an appliance that'll crank out high-end meals. Good bye, slow-cooker turkey chili, hello, sous vide steak.

And unlike the thousands of dollars a professional sous vide machine will set you back, Chow's slow cooker sous vide hack will cost you under $100. All you'll need is a cheap slow cooker, an extension cord, a thermostatic controller and a thermocouple. You should probably also have an elementary knowledge of wiring before you give this rig a whirl. Watch the video above and see how it's done.
