9 Hilarious Spanish Mistranslations (SLIDESHOWS)

Learning a foreign language is hard. The 50 million Latinos living in the United States are keenly aware of the problem. Some 38 percent of us are bilingual and practically all of us struggle at some point to make ourselves understood in the language we use less often.

Misleading words turn out not to be cognates, sentence construction isn't the same across both languages and sometimes words mean different things to people from different countries even when they speak the same language. Mistakes are bound to happen.

With the growth of the Hispanic population, some people are learning that the hard way. Last year's GOP presidential candidate learned on the campaign trail that "papaya" isn't a fruit for Cubans. In April, Target had to rename a pair of sandals branded as "orina" -- Spanish for "urine."

People have a tendency to get embarrassed when they goof up, but as we've pointed out before, mistranslations are more often than not: hilarious.
