With 60,000 tickets that often sell out in under two hours, the allure of Burning Man is indisputable.
But as anyone who follows the festival knows, the playa is not without its controversies. From entry crises to safety concerns to serious questions about law enforcement, Burning Man faces a constant struggle between regulation and the event's free spirited mission.
In their new documentary, "SPARK: A Burning Man Story," filmmakers Steve Brown and Jessie Deeter go behind the scenes to explore the inspiration, controversy and gravitational appeal of one of the world's most famous festivals.
The film will celebrate its world premiere next month at Austin's film, music and technology conference, South by Southwest.
"It's a dream come true to be back at SXSW with SPARK," said Brown in a press release. "[Burning man founder] Larry Harvey once described his mission in leading Burning Man as creating a place that would give people permission to act on their dreams. Larry's advice and Burning Man itself inspired me to take a chance and make this film."
Though the only scheduled screenings are at SXSW, Brown and Deeter hope to follow the festival with a multicity tour.
