'Specific, Credible Threat' Still Unresolved

September 11 'Specific, Credible Threat' Still Unresolved

Last week's specific, "credible but unconfirmed" threat of a terrorist attack reported in the days before the tenth anniversary of 9/11 remains "an ongoing threat," Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano told a Senate committee.

"It is not resolved," agreed FBI Director Robert Mueller, testifying before the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs on Tuesday. He said that the FBI and other agencies had followed up on hundreds of leads and were pursing several. "As a result we have been able to eliminate some aspects where we thought we ought to be looking," he said, but made clear the threat remained.

Matthew Olsen testified before the committee for the first time since his confirmation last month as director of the National Counterterrorism Center. He also agreed that his agency is "not prepared to say it’s been resolved."

According to Napolitano, Department of Homeland Security fusion centers -- 73 regional facilities where intelligence from private, federal, state and local agencies are gathered together and analyzed -- are involved in the effort to uncover the current, credible threat.
