'Spider-Man' Robbery Foiled By Broom-Wielding Clerks In Jacksonville, N.C.

'Spider-Man' With Sword Outmuscled By Broom-Brandishing Clerks

No self-respecting Spider-Man would have gotten caught in a web like this.

A robber donning a Spidey mask and brandishing a sword attempted to hold up a Jacksonville, N.C. convenience store, but was thwarted by two clerks who fought back against the web-slinger, the Associated Press reports.

A woman working in the shop early Wednesday morning armed herself with a broom and poked the alleged thief, Dale Foughty, in his stomach when he waved the saber in her face, according to TV station WECT.

A second employee joined in the tussle. Foughty, 56, escaped -- temporarily -- but lost his mask. Part of his ponytail was ripped out too, police said.

Onslow County sheriff's deputies found Foughty nearby in a home where he'd already shaved his head, but they saw bumps on his hands that were evidence of the broom-bashing.

He was charged with attempted armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon.

There's been a spate of armed robberies by a man also wearing a Spider-Man mask in Wilmington, but authorities don't suspect Foughty was involved. The Wilmington culprit has a slimmer physique and is taller than Doughty, who has a "pop belly" according to a statement from the Onslow County sheriff.

In the unsolved cases, the evil Spidey asks for Newport cigarettes before demanding cash and cartons of smokes. Police believe that thief is fencing the pilfered cigarettes, according to TV station WWAY.
